About

The Open Door Bakery offers hope and opportunity through the communal art of baking.

Our passionate team of bakers includes past and present residents of the Open Door Women’s Center at Degage Ministries. All of the bakery profits directly support this overnight shelter for women in crisis.

The Open Door Bakery provides women with an opportunity for meaningful work, and delicious baked goods to our wider community.

This job is so fulfilling. I love baking. I have ever since I was a kid. I truly enjoy every moment that I am here.

“After being trained in culinary arts, I lost my home, and the kitchen I had to practice my skills. I’m so glad to have that place again.”

What gifts do you give to Open Door Bakery?

I have a lot of experience with cleaning, so I know how to make the kitchen shine! I also have a very positive attitude, and I make sure that the kitchen is an encouraging place.

What gifts do you receive from Open Door Bakery?

I love the community here, and I’m inspired by the volunteers that come in and give us their kindness and their time. I love how nothing at Dégagé is just one-sided. It’s all a two-way street of giving and receiving.

“My grandma was a baker, and a very important person to me. She baked from scratch, just like we do; she would use the real butter, and the real lemon juice, so I feel her looking down on me while I’m baking these cookies with the same ingredients.”
